The Divine AUM
The Om symbol is a sacred syllable representing Brahman, the impersonal Absolute - omnipotent, omnipresent, and the source of all manifest existence. Brahman, in itself, is incomprehensible; so a symbol becomes mandatory to help us realize the Unknowable. Om, therefore, represents both the unmanifest (nirguna) and manifest (saguna) aspects of God. That is why it is called Pranava, to mean that it pervades life and runs through our prana or breath.
Aum is said to be the essence of all mantras, the highest of all matras or divine word (shabda), brahman (ultimate reality) itself. Aum is said to be the essence of the Vedas.
By sound and form, AUM symbolizes the infinite Brahman (ultimate reality) and the entire universe.
A stands for Creation
U stands for Preservation
M stands for Destruction or dissolution
AUM has remained an enduring mystery even for mystics. Since thirty five centuries no one, including the great masters, has been able to say why AUM works. All they can say is that it does work - it takes the individual into another realm of experience - and reveals visions and truths he will never be able to articulate when he surfaces. The AUM is considered as the Pranava, the primordial resonance of creation, the great seed sound, the first and original expression of the formed universe. The AUM is not of this age or this place. It transcends Time and Space. It can represent the past, the present and the future - or even an unimaginable state where time does not exist.
Indeed the mystery of AUM may be unraveled someday by a Quantum physicist, applying as yet undiscovered theories about matter and the universe. Meanwhile, lets master the technique without worrying over how and why it works. The AUM is a sweet and beautiful sound, but saying it in the mind isn’t so easy. In fact it’s almost impossible for people who have lived on the surface all their lives. It needs a pre-requisite of silence and inner calm. If you don’t have the calm you can’t chant it. The reverse is also true - if you can repeat it inside your head effortlessly, you are already an evolved person.
The method of chanting AUM
All the words produced by the human vocal organ can be represented by AUM. A(au) is produced from the naval region, U(oo) from the throat and M(mmmm) by closing the lips.
The detailed process of chanting om for health is described below :-----
Sit in a comfortable posture with spine erect and take few deep breaths, this will make you feel relaxed and tension free. Close your eyes and take a deep breath expanding your belly. Now slowly start exhaling, while exhaling chant A from the naval region and continue chanting A for 3-4 seconds then bring your attention at the throat and chant U from the throat for 4-5 seconds and then in the final stage of exhalation close your lips and chant M for the remaining time of exhalation.
AUM word consists of three vibrations the first one A is sounded as au (as in caught) the second is U is sounded as oo (as in moon) and M as mmmmmm.
So, it finally stands auauau-oooooooo-mmmmmmmmmm(3-4-5).
