Positive Thinking
The book and movie, The Se¬cret, sparked off my journey into positive thinking. On reading how peoples’ lives had changed by changing their thought patterns, I too was inspired to try it out.
It worked! I will be taking up the job of my dreams in a month’s time. I had a very strong de¬sire to do something spiritual, and I discovered that I was good at writing. During the last two months I kept visualising myself doing spiritual writing. I even wrote a resignation letter to my boss and colleagues in my present job as engineer (although I didn’t send it to them!). I went for all the workshops I could get my hands on, energy workshops, meditations, even Vipassana. Then I started writing short articles, so that I could get a job if someone liked them. The path unfolded itself slowly. One thing led to another, and just yester¬day I got a confirmation, and will be joining Life Positive as a journalist.
Two very important requirements are intensity of desire and trust in the Divine. Don’t expect things to happen on their own. Opportunities will come up but you will need to catch and then pursue them.
Thinking positive
So how can one use the principles of posi¬tive thinking in one’s life?
The philosophy behind this concept is that everything in this universe is made up of energy or vibrations. Every part of the universe, even the rocks and minerals, is basically energy that has been transformed. Similarly, our thoughts and words are also subtle energies or vibrations.
Quantum Physics confirms that anything and everything in the physical universe is the result of varying degrees of vibration.
Secondly, similar vibrations and energy are attracted to each other. This is a univer¬sal law that is applicable to all things, called the ‘Law of Attraction’.
The simplest definition of this law is ‘like attracts like.’ All forms of matter and ener¬gy are attracted to that which is of a like vibration. For instance, you are drawn to like-minded people (similar vibrations). We are basically living magnets who are trans¬mitting our ‘thoughts (thought vibrations)’ into the universe and also attracting ‘similar vibrations’ to us, constantly. It is because of vibrations, that for no logical reason, we are sometimes immediately attracted to some persons and also repelled to some people, though we are meeting them for the first time.
Whatever we think about, good or bad, is transmitted into the universe, in the form of thought energy or vibrations. The stronger our thought or the more often we think about a particular thought, the stronger become its vibrations. We are all radiating that which we are; we are all giving and receiving vibration signals on many different levels. What you are seeking to be or do in this life has a vibrational pat¬tern to match.
Everything you have ever dreamt, wheth¬er spoken or unspoken has been transmit¬ted by you on one level or another. Your consistent thoughts and feelings about any particular subject are being brought into your experience whether you intend them or not.
Thoughts, feelings, and mental images are made of matter, just a very subtle kind of matter. This subtle kind of matter, is the soil of the universe. When you focus your thoughts, feeling and mental images (some also call this a mental hologram), you launch your creations into this soil of the universe.
If you know how the law of attraction works, you know that you get what you vibrate. Your vibration is based on your thoughts, since thoughts drive feelings, and feelings are what comprise your vibration. The universe returns what you have given freely a thousand times over. What you sow is what you reap. In order to receive you must give. If you wish some¬one to have more blessings and love, you will receive blessings and love a thousand times more. If you wish someone illness and misfortune, you will receive bad luck and misfortunes a thousand times more. I am sure you have noticed that when you are in a good mood, everything seems to fall into place. However, when you are angry or depressed a string of bad luck seems to follow you all the more.
When you think about anything very strongly with emotions, it becomes your dominant vibration, which is being sent to the universe. Based on the Law of Attraction, the universe then creates such circumstanc¬es, which will bring that particular thing or event in your life. There could be a delay in manifestation of that thing, but if you are consistent in your thought, it will come. It is said that our work is to throw our desires and goals to the universe. How it manifests in your life, is the work of the universe. The more clear and consistent you are in your desire, the quicker that particular thing will manifest in your life. It could be a material¬istic thing, a relationship, a particular self-improvement, anything for that matter. In addition, for the universe there is no differ¬ence in manifesting Rs 100 or Rs 1 crore. The difference is in the extent of our faith or, in our own self-worth.
This universal law is working in your life right now, whether you are aware of it or not. You are attracting the people, situa¬tions, jobs and every other circumstance of your life. Once you are aware of this law and how it works, you can use it to attract what you want into your life.
How do you create your desires using the powerful law?
• Be very clear about what you want
• Visualise and raise your vibration
• Start feeling good about it, just as you would feel if it is already with you.
You must be very clear on exactly what your desire is. Focus on it. Give it all your positive energy. Feel good!
A major factor behind this universal law is the energy and vibrations of our emotions and feel¬ings. Any thought you might have, when com¬bined with emotion, vibrates out from you to the universe, and will attract back what you want.
It’s also important to take the necessary action to make your dreams come true.
Now all you have to do is allow it. Sounds easy, right? This can be the most difficult part to do. Be doubt-free. All you need to do is expect it. Act like you already have it. Be grateful.
To get it right be very careful about some factors. First is ‘right speech’. Avoid negative language, for negativity will attract negativity in your life. Be care¬ful about what you say, either about yourself or oth¬ers. At the same time do not get paranoid. We will almost never be able to be positive all the time, for many of our thinking patterns are unconscious. Stop worrying if you have been running yourself down or someone else. It’s okay. Simply use the opportunity to recommit yourself to the goal of self-awareness.
Secondly, use the power of affirmations and visualise your object of desire vividly, as if you already have it. Visualise or imaging it in detail with colour and feelings, as much as you can. Never forget your focus. Even if it takes time, you will finally get it.
Oh yes, terrorism. If we focus on insecurity, fear, terrorism, and recession, we indirectly attract terrorism in the world. So use the law of attraction to draw a happy, peaceful and loving world around us. Voila! Problem solved.
Stray thoughts on personal development, health problems, religious philosopy and other matters which come in my mind.

Effect of Sun in Your Horoscope
Signs of a weak Sun in the Chart
Indications are a lack of self-confidence, self–esteem or self-respect – a general low self-worth. There will be lack of strength of will and courage, along with fear of others. The individual may lack drive and motivation and may be dependent upon others emotionally and materially. They will look to others (usually family and friends), for their sense of identity and will find it difficult to do things on their own. They will have a poor self-image, and look to others to define who they are. They are usually not very successful in life or their success will not make them feel good about themselves. The individual may be sluggish, slow, dull or lethargic. The father of the person usually does not have a good fate in life either.
On the physical level, the individual may suffer from low energy, pallor, anaemia, cold extremities, weak digestion, poor appetite, weak or slow pulse, weak heart and poor circulation. There may be edema, accumulation of water and phlegm, and general hypo-function of the organs and nervous system. The eyesight may be poor. There may be arthritis and weakness of the bones. The resistance will be low, particularly to cold and damp conditions.
Factors
A weak Sun is evidenced by the Sun being in its debility (Libra), or in an inimical sign (like those of Saturn), in difficult houses (like the sixth, eight, twelfth) or under malefic aspect (like those of Saturn, Rahu or Ketu). Ketu’s aspect or close conjunction is particularly difficult.
The Sun is usually a benefic planet for Aries, Leo, Scorpio and Sagittarius ascendants. For them, the positive qualities of the Sun like leadership, independence, intelligence and insight can be enhanced by these same measures, even if the Sun is not weak.
Gem
The main gemstone for the Sun is a Ruby. It should be a minimum of two carats in size. It should be set in gold of fourteen carats or more, and worn on the ring finger of the right hand. It should be a good quality, without flaws and transparent.
As a substitute, garnet can be used, but it should be of at least three carats in size, preferably five. A large garnet pendent, or strand of garnet, can be worn around the neck.
These gems should be put on first on a Sunday, preferably at the rising of the Sun, particularly when the Sun is strong, as when in its own sign or exalted (also good is in Sagittarius).
When to be careful wearing a gem for the Sun
Gems for the Sun should usually not be worn if the individual suffers from fever, bleeding, ulcers, hypertension, or infectious disease (high pitta). Psychological indications are excess ambition, seeking of power, a dominating nature, a strong ego, pride, or vanity.
Astrological factors are when the Sun is the lord of malefic houses (like the third, sixth and eleventh). We should be careful wearing gems for the Sun when benefic planets in the chart, like the Moon, Venus, Mercury, or Jupiter are in combust (close conjunction), or in strong aspect (opposition) to it.
Colors
One should meditate on the red or gold solar orb as residing in the heart. One should use light, bright, clear, transparent, warm colors- generally red, yellow, gold and orange- avoiding dark colors, places and environments, particularly cloudy colors, grays, and blacks.
Herbs
Solar energy is increased by taking spicy and fiery herbs, like cayenne, black pepper, dry ginger, long pepper, cardamom, saffron, calamus, bayberry and cinnamon (specifically the Ayurvedic formula Trikatu). Calamus is best for the sattvic side of solar energy in the mind.
Aromatic oils and fragrances for the Sun are camphor, cinnamon, eucalyptus, saffron-most warm and stimulating oils.
Mantras
There are many mantras for the Sun, as the Sun has many names like Surya, Savitar, Aditya, Ravi, Mitra, Varuna, Aryaman, Pushan, Indra, Agni, and so on.
The main name mantra is: OM SURYAYA NAMAHA. Others are OM SAVITRE NAMAHA; OM ADITYAYA NAMAHA; OM RAVAYE NAMAHA. The main bija (seed) mantra is OM SUM (Pronounced soom). These mantra should be repeated at least 108 times a week, preferably on a Sunday, during the day (as at dawn, noon or sunset).
Another good seed mantra for the Sun is RAM (pronounced rahm), the name of the avatar Rama. This increases our connection with the Divine light generally. Om itself is said in the Vedas and Upanishads to be the sound of the Sun. The Sun is the essence of all vowels.
Deities
The Sun relates to the Divine father. In the Hindu religion, this is Shiva, Mahadeva, the great God. Yet the Sun represents the Divine presence generally and whatever form of the Divine we worship can be used for this purpose. The second great Hindu form of the Divine, Vishnu, is also worshipped as the Sun, representing more the immanent or benefic side of solar energy.
The Sun is also the Divine Son. The great avatars are sons of the Sun. Christ follows in this line as well, with his birth at the winter solstice (the Sun reborn), as do Rama, Krishna and Buddha.
Yoga
Usually the individual will do well in practising meditation and the Yoga of knowledge to connect to the higher self within.
The main thing is to establish a sense of self-identity according to our inner nature as pure consciousness. We must learn to discriminate between the lower self and the higher self. We should trace the origin of the “I thought” to the Divine light within the heart.
Life Style
The individual should cultivate independence and courage. They should challenge their fears. They should bring the light into all the dark corners of their mind. They should learn to appear in public alone and be able to spend time alone. They should strive to take more initiative and a leadership role in life. They should spend time outdoors in the Sun, along with Sun-bathing twenty minutes or more a day.
They should rise early in the morning and greet the Sun, preferably with some prayer or chant to the Divine at dawn, noon and sunset.

Enhance Health Tips
Breathe right!
Enhance your health with proper breathing. Breathing is so simple we often take it
for granted, but it has fundamental influence on body, mind, and spirit. Every time
we breathe in air, we bring oxygen into the body and spark the transformation of
nutrients into fuel. Every time we breathe out, we purge the body of carbon dioxide, a toxic waste.
Breathing influences our state of mind. Shallow breathing can make us tense.
Deep breathing can make use calm. Breathing can make our thinking confused or
clear. In the yogic tradition, breathing is the means of acquiring prana, the ethereal substance that powers life.
Pranayama is the optimization of prana through the control of the breath.
Pranayama can be practiced with or without the practice of other poses. You already know how to do this.
1. Sit comfortable with your spine straight or lie comfortable on your back. Take
deep breaths through your nostrils.
2. Relax your breath as you slightly contract the back of your throat. The first time
you do this, you may create an "oinking" sound rather like a pig! Do not worry about
unusual sounds. With a little practice, you will create a steady hissing sound as you
breathe in and out. You do not have to force this sounds, but it should be loud
enough that another person in the room could hear it.
3. Breathe as long and deep as you can without creating tension anywhere in the body.
Perfect your technique with help of an instructor.
What diseases can be relieved by pranayama? Pranayama purifies the channels
along which the life stream of 'prana' flows in the body and prevents various
disorders. It increases one's resistance to respiratory diseases. It helps cure
cough and cold, insomnia, chronic headache and asthma. And, as recently
reported in the Journal of Alternative and Complementary Medicine, pranayama can even relieve diabetes and heart disease.
Enhance health with colour.
The complete healing spectrum of natural light is essential to health. The full
moon is the ancient symbol of completion. The rays of light cast by the moon on
the earth contain colour in the form of white light. The white light of the moon
originates in the sun and contains seven different colours - violet, indigo, blue,
green, yellow, orange and red. These are natural colours which are highly beneficial to the maintenance of health and for healing diseases.
How can you tell if you are receiving all the colours of the healing sun? In 1932,
Gerrard and Hessay, two Californian psychologists, scientifically established that
blue light had a calming effect and red a stimulating power on human beings. A
patient is first subjected to an examination to ascertain which colour he lacks. The
deficiency is determined by observing the colour of the eyeballs, nails, urine and
excrement. In cases of the lack of red, the eyes and nails will be bluish, and the
urine and excrement white or bluish. If there is a deficiency of the blue colour, the eyes and nails will be reddish and urine and excrement yellowish or red. This
is a good day to consider whether you are receiving all the vital colours of health in your daily
life.
Drink water regularly.
Regular drinking of water is beneficial not only for constipation but also for
cleaning the system, diluting the blood and washing out poisons. Normally six to
eight glasses of water should be taken daily as it is essential for digesting and
dissolving food nutrients so that they can be absorbed and utilised by the body.
Water should, however, not be taken with meals as it dilutes the gastric juices
essential for proper digestion. Water should be taken either half an hour before or an hour after meals.
Chew, chew, chew, for it's the thing to do.
The process of digestion begins in the mouth. The saliva in the moth, besides
helping to masticate the food, carries an enzyme called ptyalin which begins the
chemical action of digestion. It initiates the catabolism (breakdown) of
carbohydrates by converting starches into simple sugars. This explains the need
for thorough mastication of starchy food in the mouth. If this is not done the ptyalin cannot carry out its functions as it is active in an alkaline, neutral or
slightly acid medium and is inactivated by the highly acid gastric juices in the stomach.
Although enzymatic action starts while food is being chewed, digestion moves into
high gear only when the chewed food has passed the esophagus and reached
the stomach. While the physical action of peristalsis churns and kneads solid
food into a semi-solid amorphous mixture called chyme, this mixture undergoes
chemical changes initiated by gastric juices secreted by the walls of the stomach. These juices include mucus for lubricating the stomach, hydrochloric
acid and gastric juice.
The enzyme or active principle of the gastric juice is pepsin. This enzyme in
combination with hydrochloric acid starts the breakdown of proteins into absorbable amino acids called
polypeptides. An additional enzyme, rennin, plays an important role in the
stomach of the infant. It curdles milk and allows the pepsin to work upon it. The
gastric juice has no effect upon starches or fats.
Tip 64. Eat plant foods for faster healing.
An exclusive diet of raw juices of fruits and vegetables results in much faster
recovery from diseases and more effective cleansing and regeneration of the
tissues than the fasting on pure water.
Dr. Ragnar Berg, a world-renowned authority on nutriton and biochemistry observes:
"During fasting the body burns up and excretes huge amounts of accumulated wastes. We
can help this cleansing process by drinking alkaline juices instead of water while fasting.
I have supervised many fasts and made extensive examinations and tests of fasting
patients, and I am convinced that drinking alkali-forming fruit and vegetable juices,
instead of water, during fasting will increase the healing effect of fasting. Elimination of
uric acid and other inorganic acids will be accelerated. And sugars in juices will
strengthen the heart. Juice fasting is, therefore, the best form of fasting."

Why Forgiveness
Why Forgive
Forgiveness is that quality in a human being which separates him from the animals and the lower forms of living beings. To preach forgiveness is a simple task but to be able to practice forgiveness in real life is the essence of life.
Only a person with extreme humbleness imbibed within and a feeling of compassion for his compatriot is able to practice forgiveness! To be able to forgive requires that the forgiver forgoes all the sufferings of the past that may have been inflicted upon him by the gruesome acts of the indulgent. A tough task indeed but not something that cannot be practised!
In most circumstances one may not have committed any sin, still practising forgiveness brings within us a feeling of extreme calm and compassion for the mankind in general. Practice of forgiveness normally cannot be practiced by the common man for it requires practising patience to its extreme.
If we are to achieve our goal of life... we just cannot manage to cling on to events of the past... happenings which cannot be reversed by us using any means. We cannot travel back in time to undo the events of the past. Why not practice forgiveness and forgive those ignorant denizens of the society who practiced ill will and caused harm to the society.
Forgiving the ignorant is the best policy... it clears us of the debris of the past! Indulgence in the ugly residual remembrances of the past results in anger. Why destroy our body and health by harbouring the evil thoughts of the past.
Knowing well that we cannot undo the events of the past... we must brace ourselves for the times ahead! To be able to peacefully practice in the present we need to follow the dictates of forgiveness to its extreme! There are no allowances in the field of forgiveness. It has to be total surrender!
Practising forgiveness is the biggest boon to mankind from God the Almighty. One can exercise this power and reach for the higher goals of life by discriminating between the good and the bad. Harbouring ill will against one never yields positive results.
In the present times when the values in the society are in their lowest ebb we need to exercise this special power of discrimination (practising forgiveness) quite often. We have no other remedy if we are to rise to a higher bracket in life.
Every successful person in life practices forgiveness to its extreme. Whether it was Mahatma Gandhi, John F. Kennedy or Margaret Thatcher and Bill Gates for that matter... all were and are the best practitioners of forgiveness in their life.
Forgiveness just cannot be preached... it has to be practiced in totality! Only then shall we be able to enjoy the fruits of practising forgiveness in the present life. All the Man Gods of the yester era... Mahavira, Gautama Buddha, Jesus Christ and Prophet Mohammed practiced forgiveness all the time right from a very young age.
Practising forgiveness gives you an edge over your contemporary... it helps maintain the sanity of a person. Forgiveness reduces the element of hate which follows whenever wanton desires get practiced.
Citing an example-
One Yogi (a renowned seeker of spirituality) was one day having a bath on the edge of a swollen river which had flooded. It so happened that because of the flood one scorpion happened to float by. On seeing the plight of the scorpion that it might die... the Yogi picked it up in his hand but immediately had to do away for the scorpion gave a piercing poisonous bite.
Unmindful of the bite the Yogi again picked up the scorpion and again the scorpion bit his hand. This happened thrice. One passerby who was aware of the spiritual accomplishments of the Yogi could not contain himself and coming near to the Yogi enquired of him why he was trying to help the nasty scorpion.
The reply by the Yogi made the onlooker flabbergasted. It was not to be believed for the Yogi had replied, "when this poor scorpion (a much lower level of species on the plane of evolution) is not able to let go of his habit of biting one... how could the Yogi let go of his habit of helping one. What a great practitioner of compassion and forgiveness this Indian Yogi was.
In spite of being bitten thrice... he was able to practice forgiveness owing to the feeling of compassion within. This is how forgiveness can be truly defined. A true practitioner of forgiveness never thinks of the results of the acts by the other but remains concentrated on the end goal of his life... always and ever! This helps one develop the power of forgiveness... true compassion to be practiced in daily life.

Here is a real story of forgiveness published in Washinton post
1) The Amish School Tragedy
Amish Grace: How Forgiveness Transcended Tragedy (amazon) (256 pages, 2007) by Donald B Kraybill, Steven M Nolt and David L Weaver-Zercher. Description of the book (from back cover):
On Monday morning, October 2, 2006, a gunman entered a one-room Amish school in Nickel Mines, Pennsylvania . In front of twenty-five horrified pupils, thirty-two-year-old Charles Roberts ordered the boys and the teacher to leave. After tying the legs of the ten remaining girls, Roberts prepared to shoot them execution with an automatic rifle and four hundred rounds of ammunition that he brought for the task. The oldest hostage, a thirteen-year-old, begged Roberts to “shoot me first and let the little ones go.” Refusing her offer, he opened fire on all of them, killing five and leaving the others critically wounded. He then shot himself as police stormed the building. His motivation? “I’m angry at God for taking my little daughter,” he told the children before the massacre.
The story captured the attention of broadcast and print media in the United States and around the world. By Tuesday morning some fifty television crews had clogged the small village of Nickel Mines , staying for five days until the killer and the killed were buried. The blood was barely dry on the schoolhouse floor when Amish parents brought words of forgiveness to the family of the one who had slain their children.
The outside world was incredulous that such forgiveness could be offered so quickly for such a heinous crime. Of the hundreds of media queries that the authors received about the shooting, questions about forgiveness rose to the top. Forgiveness, in fact, eclipsed the tragic story, trumping the violence and arresting the world’s attention.
Within a week of the murders, Amish forgiveness was a central theme in more than 2,400 news stories around the world. The Washington Post, The New York Times, USA Today, Newsweek, NBC Nightly News, CBS Morning News, Larry King Live, Fox News, Oprah, and dozens of other media outlets heralded the forgiving Amish. From the Khaleej Times (United Arab Emirates ) to Australian television, international media were opining on Amish forgiveness. Three weeks after the shooting, “Amish forgiveness” had appeared in 2,900 news stories worldwide and on 534,000 web sites.
Fresh from the funerals where they had buried their own children, grieving Amish families accounted for half of the seventy-five people who attended the killer’s burial. Roberts’ widow was deeply moved by their presence as Amish families greeted her and her three children. The forgiveness went beyond talk and graveside presence: the Amish also supported a fund for the shooter’s family.
AMISH GRACE explores the many questions this story raises about the religious beliefs and habits that led the Amish to forgive so quickly. It looks at the ties between forgiveness and membership in a cloistered communal society and ask if Amish practices parallel or diverge from other religious and secular notions of forgiveness. It will also address the matter of why forgiveness became news. “All the religions teach it,” mused an observer, “but no one does it like the Amish.” Regardless of the cultural seedbed that nourished this story, the surprising act of Amish forgiveness begs for a deeper exploration. How could the Amish do this? What did this act mean to them? And how might their witness prove useful to the rest of us?
